Question: Disposable Camping Supplies

Posted by: Shane Ardell about 1 year ago

So, when you're camping you follow that golden rule: pack it in, pack it out.  No one has actually told me what it means, but I assume it means everything you bring into the wilderness you take back out with you, including your trash.

That's pretty straightforward, and trash cans are usually provided for you near the parking area so you can easily discard everything as you're leaving.

But here's my question: You constantly use plastic and paper items and eat individually wrapped foods - like granola bars.  Yes, you take your trash out with you, but at home I would normally use real silverware and plates rather than stuff you throw away, and I would buy a full container of cereal and recycle the box rather than buy a box of individually wrapped granola bars.

I guess the question is, is there any way around it?

You might have good luck with home-made energy bars, that you could put in reusable plastic containers. To keep your energy up, try folding together variations of peanut butter, oatmeal or other cereals, and dried fruits like apples, cranberries, or bananas. Be creative and have fun mixing variations together. I use brown rice syrup as a binder, which is high in sugary carbohydrates, but works because it's extremely sticky. There's no need to even bake them, just keep them airtight & moist. Good luck & happy trails!
