Question: Is there such a thing as too much?

Posted by: Peter Gallivan about 1 year ago

How can we use technology in a sustainable way? There are many ways in which the use of technology makes us sustainable (or more so) but is there a problem with increased dependance on this? Are there any underlying issues that the shift to tecnodependance can lead to?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I'm assuming that you're talking about information technology, things like PDA's or laptops. It would seem that the primary concern is the obsolescence of PDA's, computers, etc. Because of the rapid development cycle, just about everyone I know has a drawer full of old phones, old technologies - heck, maybe even a typewriter here or there. If we're able to increase the recycled content, then that would seem to address a lot of the issue. Otherwise, I tend to agree that so much of the technology should make it easier to travel less, commute less, and generally consume fewer atoms and more bits.
