Question: Dishwasher Detergent

Posted by: Ellen Hall about 1 year ago

I have not yet found an eco-friendly diswasher liquid that does a decent job.  I know my dishes won't be squeakly, sparkly clean without the phosphates, but I'd at least like them to be free of food residue (esp as I try to break the habit of pre-rinsing).  Any suggestions?

I buy 7th Generation cleaning products. They are a company that I truly believe has fully embraced sustainability and not just trying to create a niche 'green' product to attract the surge of environmentally minded consumers. They go beyond biodegradable, and are pushing the envelope on transparency by fully labeling the ingredients in their products - not required by law.

And I just found this article debating dishwasher vs hand-washing. http://www.seventhgeneration.com/learn/blog/dish-dirty-dinnerware http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/01/built-in-dishwasher-vs-hand-washing-which-greener.php?

Oh - the dreaded pre-rinsing. Where did that come from. It's not as if I lived through the depression, but I can't seem to stop doing it. I did live in NYC without a dishwasher (I know - hard to comprehend), so maybe that's where it all got started.

The Method line of products are also good.
